Meet the World’s Largest and Smallest Hummingbirds

Smallest: The Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) – Found in Cuba and Isla de la Juventud, this bird is the world’s tiniest, measuring about 2.2 inches (5.5 cm) long and weighing less than a penny (1.6 grams).

Largest: The Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas) – Native to South America, the giant hummingbird grows up to 9 inches (23 cm) long and weighs about 20 grams—10 times heavier than the bee hummingbird!

Bee Hummingbirds Resemble Insects – Due to their miniature size and rapid wingbeats, bee hummingbirds are often mistaken for bumblebees while feeding on nectar.

Giant Hummingbirds Fly Differently – Unlike their smaller relatives, giant hummingbirds flap their wings only 10–15 times per second, making their flight look slow and graceful.

Lifespan Differences – The bee hummingbird lives about 3–5 years, while the giant hummingbird can live up to 8–10 years in the wild.

Feeding Habits – Both species rely on nectar but also consume small insects for protein. The giant hummingbird requires much more food due to its size.

Both Are Rare and Unique – Bee hummingbirds are found only in Cuba, while giant hummingbirds inhabit high-altitude regions in the Andes. Both are extraordinary examples of nature’s diversity!
